A Laingsburg, MI customer asked us to change his Ford 900 from a 6 Volt Positive Ground System to a 12 Volt Negative System.
This alternator conversion kit that we offer, changes your tractor from a 6V generator system to a 12V alternator system for models to 1964. Includes Uni-Charge Self Exciting Alternator with pulley, wiring harness, ballast resister, lower and upper mounting bracket, fan belt and installation instructions.
We converted this Ford 900 tractor charging system to a 12 volt system. It was a little time consuming, however it was well worth it. We offer this kit P-F1347 which gives you almost everything you need to change the system over (except battery, battery cables). When changing these tractors over to 12 volt I suggest you replace the battery cable's with new ones (not included in the kit). I used #1 gauge cables not #4. The #1 cable is heavier and won't get hot. The battery in this tractor is rated at 630 amp's though a lower 525 amp will do just fine. I find that if you go over this amperage you will most likely be changing the starter or starter drive gear in a very short time. If your starter or drive are weak, either both or one will show up after you change the system over anyway so if your starter is already weak you might want to go through it or replace it before you change your system over. Too many amp's to the starter usually means something has to give so do yourself a favor and get the right battery for the job and have your starter checked out..
Be sure to change the battery cables -Negative to ground and + Positive for hot (at the solenoid). You can keep your 6 volt coil because the resistor (supplied with the kit) will reduce the amperage to the coil allowing you to use your existing coil. You will also need to put the new white wire in the kit to your +Positive side of the coil and the -Negative side needs to be hooked up to the distributor. You do not need to change points, condenser, coil, rotor, cap for this change-over. Your existing parts will work fine. However this may be a good time to replace those parts if they are getting worn or corroded.
Your existing starter solenoid will also work just fine. You do not need to change the solenoid because it still activates through ground by means of the push button switch in the shifter plate. We also changed the headlights (not included in the kit) from 6 Volt to 12 Volt headlights and replaced the switch only because the customers light switch was bad.
